Admit, treat and discharge an in-patient
Admit a patient to a ward, keep a timestamped treatment timeline, and discharge them when they're ready to go home.
Updated 2026-10-02
When a patient needs to stay, admit them from their consultation record. This puts them on the clinic dashboard's In-patients list.
Who can do this: Owner, Admin, Manager and Veterinarian ("Write SOAP notes & prescriptions"). Front desk can see in-patients and timelines, but can't change them.
Admit
- 1Open the patient's consultation record. If there isn't one yet, start a consult first.
- 2In the In-patient card, click Admit.
- 3Choose a Ward. Wards are rooms of type "ward" for the visit's branch. You can also choose No ward assigned.
- 4Click Admit.
The record shows an In-patient badge, and the card shows the ward, the admission time and "Still admitted".
Record treatments
The Treatment timeline is your running case log for fluids, meds given, procedures and observations.
- 1Type the entry, for example "Ringer's lactate 200ml IV started; vitals stable".
- 2Check the date and time. They default to when you opened the page, so change them if you're logging something from earlier.
- 3Click Add.
Entries are listed oldest first, with the time and the name of the person who added them.
Discharge
- 1When the patient is ready to go home, click Discharge in the In-patient card.
- 2The discharge time is recorded and the patient leaves the dashboard's in-patient list.
- 3Optionally update the SOAP notes, write a take-home prescription, and click Close case.
Good to know
- Discharge happens immediately when you click, with no confirmation step.
- You can't close a case while the patient is still admitted.
- You can't add treatments or admit a patient once the case is closed. Click Reopen case first.
- Add or rename wards in Settings → Rooms & kennels by creating a room of type "ward".
- If a discharged patient needs to come back in, click Admit again on the same record.
Tip: Ask every shift to add at least one timeline entry per patient. It makes handovers and owner updates much easier.
